Here’s the dilemma…You buy a nokia 7610, it’s great it has lots of memory, a good user interface, loads of software available, the capability to play movies and mp3’s and…Wait a sec this phone doesn’t come with stereo sound or headphones..!???
If you look around the nokia 7610 is only compatible with single bud mono hands free kits, and Bluetooth hands free kits, which if you want to listen to your music or view movies is totally un-acceptable!
Here is a mod which will transform your standard HS-5 hands free kit, into a 3.5mm mono phono socket where you can connect your ‘quality ‘headphones in!
Obviously the setup will be dual mono (ie the same mono sound in both ears) but with some nice headphones the final sound quality is quite good (better than the supplied nokia hands free single bud kit), and gets you one step closer to an mp3 movie playing multimedia phone :)
Oh and I accept no liability for any damage you might make to your phone(even if improbable)! Use this mod at your own risk.

Now here is you’ll need to make the mod :
- Nokia Headset HS-5 (available on ebay for 8£ / 15$)
- 3.5mm Stereo Jack Extension (available on ebay for £1.50 )
- Solder kit (gun and lead)
- Glue gun (optional)
- sticky tape
- old black cable to use as shrink tubing or black tape
- time ( 30min)
I’m sorry if I don’t have detailed pictures but I didn’t think of taking pictures when making the mod.But I’ll give you ample written descriptions and don’t worry it’s an easy process…
Ok let’s get started!
-Take your 3.5mm extension cable and chop it leaving around 12 cm from the input end.
-Now take off 3cm of the outer plastic to reveal the inner cables…You should have one bare copper wire, and 2 insulated wires (one red, one white).
Strip the white and red ones, and twist the red and white wires together halfway leaving a bit of wire left to twist.
-Pick up you nokia hands free kit and cut the headphone bud out, and strip the wires leaving a few cm of wire. You should find one white cotton like wire, one red and a blue wire. Separate these for easy access, and cut and discard the white cotton like wire
Now for the interesting bit…(you need a bit of imagination)
Use some sticky tape to put the nokia wire parallel to the 3.5mm extension wires you stripped.
Nokia wire -------------------{========
Extension wire -------------------{:::::::::::::::::
Now take you red nokia wire and twist it inside the red and white wires from the extension cable so that the end of the nokia cable aligns with the end the red and white wires.
And take you blue nokia wire and twist that with the copper wire from the extension cable so that the ends of both wires match align at the end.
The fact that the wires align is important because that is where we will solder the wires (nokia wires are pre-insulated and only conduct in the centre of the wire at the extremity of the wire)
Now get your soldering gun hot, and solder the ends of the white&red&red nokia wires with a big blob of solder.
And do the same with the end of the copper and blue nokia wires with an equally big blob of solder.
Make sure the 2 groups of wire don’t touch (otherwise you could short you phone..) and test the setup with some headphones.
If it works continue to the next steps, otherwise make sure you soldered well, and that the cables are well connected.
If you have a glue gun, dab some hot glue on the solder points and isolate the wires.
Then isolate each group of wires with some sticky tape making sure the 2 groups are well isolated.
Now group the wire groups together and selotape them together.
Your setup might work, but it will look like a diy job….
This is where the spare black cable comes in handy (or the black tape)
Find a cable that is wide enough to cover the wires you have (old black coax cable does the job nicely), and use your glue gun or super glue to cover your wires with the cable outing.
Use that black cable outing to hide the wires and glue them in so that it looks like one big black cable.
Your mod should now look cool enough to hang around with your phone!
The only issue you might have is that the nokia cable might be a bit long coming out of the phone, just use a clip and roll the wire around to keep that cable at bay.
Enjoy!
